Home decor tips for the season

The festive season comes with the desire to beautify our homes, to coincide with our joyous celebrations. Often symbolic with comfort and happiness, decorating our homes is a very personal experience which is a special occasion in itself when big festivals are around the corner.

With Diwali having gone by and Christmas just around the corner, the celebrations are far from over! This blog explores seven simple tips to embellish your interiors in highly effective ways. Adding to this, every tip listed here is eco-friendly, so you can rest easy knowing that your home isn’t just going to look great but also contribute to the greater good of sustainability.

Home decor tips

Paper cup lights

At times, sticking to simplicity is the best way to go when it comes to putting up decorations. And what could be a more simple thought than repurposing used paper cups into festive lights?

This involves simply cutting a small section into the base of the paper cups, for the lights to be fitted through. Following which they can be hung directly off a wall or another showpiece adjacent to the wall.

The shape of paper cups add as lamp shades for the light to glow from. The circumference of the cups also allows it to cast interesting shadows that enhance the overall contrast of the interior.

Home decoration

Plants as decor

With numerous benefits to health and wellbeing, plants have become a staple to interiors – no matter how big or small the size of the house. But it’s not just functionality that plants bring to the table. They are also a great aesthetic element that add to the beauty of any interior space.

The colour green of plants represents tranquility, health, and luck, and as such has an overwhelmingly positive effect on human psychology. This is even more beneficial given that festive seasons are usually always associated with such feelings of happiness in the atmosphere.

Some plants that would add to your home’s aesthetic value are the Calathea Plant, Birds of Paradise, Dragon Trees, and Monstera Deliciosa.

DIY Wall hangings

There’s no better way to get all members of the family involved in festive decorations than by getting together and making them yourselves!

Wall hangers are a great way of filling up negative space on walls, especially on plain walls. Moreover, they add to the overall colour and vibrancy of the entire interior environment.

bottle decoration

DIY also comes with the welcome benefit of being able to recycle materials such as used cardboard, old bangles, and so much more – making it highly sustainable. Not only will the festive spirit be high, but also the feeling of giving back to the environment!

Bottle lights

This is possibly the simplest decoration, yet one that conveys a level of elegance that is usually unmatched by most if not all other decorations in the same space. All you need for this is an empty glass bottle and a single set of fairy lights! The glass bottle should be a fancy looking one, and the fairy lights should be bright, yet not too bright so as to cause unnecessary dispersions of light within the bottle itself.

As opposed to the paper cup lights mentioned above, these won’t hang from walls (or anywhere else), but instead will be placed on any flat surface of your choice – for instance, your coffee table.

Table decor

The table is the place where family and friends get together for a hearty meal. After all, a celebration is not complete without the unique feeling of togetherness that is felt at a dining table.

Hence, the dining table presents a great opportunity to feature decorative elements that add to the overall festive feel of the home. Some ideas for table decor are: colourful table coasters made from used cardboard, table mats made of beads, and so on.

Rugs and drapes decoration

Rugs

When we think of decorations, we often forget about the surface that is right beneath our feet – the floor! Given the amount of surface area of our floors, there are a lot of opportunities to add decorative elements to it which will further reinforce the festive feel of the home. One such great element is a rug, that can be made from scratch. Some materials that can be used to make it include cloth, threads, fabric, and even beads. Rugs also allow for a lot of variation in terms of size, shape, patterns, and colour – so feel free to keep experimenting!

Drapes

Often confused with curtains/blinds/shades, drapes are an excellent addition to wall decor, particularly where there are windows. They are great for blocking out light from the outside, as well as bouncing around light within a closed interior space. Drapes come in many different colours, and usually in thicker materials which give it its opaque properties. No matter what type you choose, you can’t go wrong with adding drapes to your decor.

Having briefly elaborate on some ideas, it’s time for you to try them out at your home during the festivities! Remember to try and think out of the box but all while having a strong foundation in the simplicity of design elements.
